12 Ways to Make Your Thanksgiving Dinner Healthier

  • Start Small: It is not what you are eating as much as it is how much you are eating.
  • Talk Turkey: Great source of lean protein. White meat is healthier than the dark meat.
  • Be sweet on sweet potatoes: Great source of Vitamin A and C, potassium, and fiber.
  • Kick the canned cranberry: Canned cranberry has added sugar and calories, so try making your own with fresh mashed cranberries.
  • Pick a pumpkin: Make pumpkin pies with canned, evaporated fat-free milk, half the amount of sugar, a graham cracker crust, and light or fat-free whipped topping.
  • Stuff with more veggies and less bread: Try to use whole wheat bread in stuffing, and add in more veggies or even cranberries for an added flavor.
  • Go fruity: Have a side of baked apples or poached pears.
  • Avoid greasy gravy: Skim the fat off before making the gravy.
  • Sacrifice fat, not flavor: Use low-fat buttermilk or low-sodium chicken stock in place of cream or whole milk in recipes.
  • Steam and mash: Try mashing up steamed cauliflower as a substitute for potatoes.
  • Veg out: Have lots of options for veggies: squash, bean, corn, asparagus, and sweet potatoes.
  • Walk it off: Walk one mile, or take an extra 2,000 steps in order to burn up to 100 calories.

Weight of the Fox Valley Initiative

Weight of the Fox Valley (WOTFV) is a community health initiative that encourages active lifestyles and healthy habits among residents in the Fox Valley. This initiative is includes Calumet, Outagamie, and Winnebago counties. Their vision is that in the Fox Valley there is the ability to achieve and maintain a healthy weight at every age.

Why is this initiative important to our community?

According to the 2011 Fox Cities LIFE Study, more than 60% of Fox Valley residents are overweight or obese. There are physical, social, psychological, and economic consequences of being overweight to the individuals and the community. Through a county-wide initiative, Weight of the Fox Valley is a collaboration among various community organizations to improve the health of Fox Valley residents. Representatives from businesses, healthcare, government, faith communities, educational institutions, nonprofit agencies, and philanthropic organizations have come together in order to make a real, positive change in our community.

How will WOTFV achieve their vision?

Through a collective impact model, Weight of the Fox Valley has created a shared approach to solving the community problem of obesity. The collaborative efforts of various organizations focus on creating shared goals, mutual supporting activities, continuous communication, developing common measures for success, and backbone support. Various action teams are being formed to address the public settings where the largest impact can be attained including active communities, early childhood, food systems, healthcare, schools, and worksites. Action teams find and implement ways to create an environment that supports healthier choices, opportunities to be active, and nutritious foods. In the end these efforts will create a community where healthy living is the norm.

This collaboration includes many community partners such as the county health departments, Affinity, Aurora and ThedaCare health systems, and the United Ways in Oshkosh and the Fox Cities.
