FamilyWize Prescription Discount Card Available to Oshkosh Residents

United Way Makes FamilyWize's Prescription Discount Card Available to Oshkosh Residents

Oshkosh, WI —November 21, 2017—  The Oshkosh Area United Way and the FamilyWize Community Service Partnership are improving access to affordable prescription medications through a free, easy to use prescription discount card.  As part of United Way’s focus on health, education, and financial stability, the partnership between United Way and FamilyWize is an excellent fit.

The card gives individuals and families access to discounts on prescription drugs, allowing them to save an average of around 40 percent on their medications. The FamilyWize program is free, has no eligibility requirements, and provides access to medications at an affordable cost.  Over 10 million Americans have saved more than $1 billion on their prescriptions.  Locally, since 2005 in Winnebago County alone, more than $316,725 has been saved by approximately 3,235 residents as a result of the partnership, and by people using the card at local pharmacies.

Participants can access FamilyWize in two ways:  through the website at FamilyWize.org or through a new smartphone app.   The cost-effective tool called the“Medicine Cabinet”, available on the FamilyWize website and app, gives users the ability to manage their prescriptions and save with one swift click of a button. With Medicine Cabinet, consumers can tailor their experience by saving prescriptions to their personalized FamilyWize profile. The tool also allows for the addition or removal of prescriptions, changes in dosage, and preferred pharmacy location.
“With the great success of the FREE prescription discount card and now the smartphone app, we’re proud to partner with FamilyWize in providing access to savings for families with limited incomes,” stated Executive Director Sue Panek.  “This program makes a real impact on the lives of local residents.”  Residents like Kristina.

“I have fibromyalgia, and take five different medications for it, and comorbid conditions. I was paying close to $400 each month for my prescriptions. I had been using a different discount program, which reduced my cost $250. However, when I heard about FamilyWize and used it at the pharmacy, I now pay less than $200/month. Combined with my husband’s prescriptions, we have saved almost 60% on our medications each month. I have also shared the FamilyWize program with my in-laws. They will be saving around $300 per month on their medications as well. One of the best features of the FamilyWize program is that you can enter your zip code on their website, and it will find the least costly place to purchase your medications in your area. My in-laws no longer have to drive 35 miles to the pharmacy, as they were able to transfer their prescriptions to one only 15 minutes away.”

FamilyWize is one of the longest running prescription savings programs in the country and is accepted at more than 60,000 pharmacies nationwide, covering all FDA-approved prescription medications.  With the FamilyWize Drug Price Look-up Tool, consumers can quickly identify local pharmacies with the lowest price for their medications. By showing their FamilyWize Prescription Discount Card to the pharmacist upon pick-up, consumers can then save on those medications. Smartphone users can also download the FamilyWize mobile app at the iOS App Store and Google Play.

Through increased promotion of the program, United Way hopes to see more people in the greater Oshkosh area saving money, and fewer people worrying about the rising costs of their medications.

Cards and informational materials about the FamilyWize prescription savings program are distributed through the network of nonprofit organizations in Oshkosh including United Way partner agencies and local food pantries.  Residents may also visit the Oshkosh Area United Way website at www.oshkoshunitedway.org/familywize or call United Way’s 2-1-1 helpline to learn more.
